Herbalist Journey: Chun-mui, founder of Remembrance Apothecary

We are blessed to be a part of hundreds of herbal journeys around the world. Every month we take the opportunity to honor that by sharing a former student’s journey to herbalism with you. We call it our alumni series.

This month we are hearing from Chun-mui. When a fast-paced career in the fashion industry took a toll on her physical and mental well-being, Chun-mui Miller sought refuge in the world of herbs. And in connecting with nature, she discovered her true self.

Today, she is a health and spiritual wellness coach and the founder of Remembrance Apothecary – a renowned natural and organic beauty brand.

Here is her story:

How Chun-mui Arrived at Herbalism: Meeting my Plant Teachers

Herbalism found me at a critical moment in my life. At that time I was working in the fast-paced and demanding fashion industry. It had left me with limited time for self-care and was causing strain in my relationships. I felt deeply unfulfilled and disconnected from my own true joy and purpose. My body eventually reached breaking point, and I found myself in the emergency blood losing a dangerous amount of blood.

The doctors discovered that I had a large growth of polyps in my uterus, and surgery was the recommended solution. However, I was determined to find an alternative and spent the next months researching natural health alternatives, and I stumbled upon a women’s herbal health care class series being taught by Pam, the founder of BHC.

During this time, I immersed myself in the world of herbalism, cooking whole foods straight from the earth, and exploring the healing properties of plants and herbs. I also began to turn my attention inward practicing mindfulness, meditation and deeply listening to my body and the natural world around me. Through this journey, I not only healed without the need for surgery but also discovered through the journey, my passion and love for the magical green world of plants who I lovingly revere as my great teachers, who helped me reconnect with the remembrance of what it truly means to be human and alive.

Now as an herbalist, I’m grateful for the opportunity to share the wisdom and healing power of plants with others, and I’m committed to helping people rediscover their own innate ability to heal and connect with nature.

My Time at BHC: Becoming a Practicing Herbalist

My time at Berkeley Herbal Clinic was truly transformative. It gave me the opportunity to work closely with plants, getting to know them intimately in a setting with a community of others who shared my awe and wonder for the world of plants and love for our Mother Earth. It was a time of significant growth for me. I expanded my mind to learn a whole new language, the language of plants, and I developed an appreciation from learning from both the folk traditions and clinical teachings. This experience has given me the ability to serve as a bridge between different approaches to healing and has broadened my ability to now provide care and support to a diverse range of individuals.

Today, as a practicing herbalist, I am grateful for the foundational knowledge and experience that I gained at BHC. It has provided me with a solid framework to build upon as I continue to deepen my knowledge and understanding of the natural world and the ways in which I can work with plants to promote healing and harmony.

Chun-mui’s All Natural Skincare Routine

I love cleansing with this simple and pure ingredient because it is rich with nutrients for the skin and works as a gentle cleanser with anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It’s perfect for even the most sensitive skin and helps to retain moisture and hydration. I prefer local honey and I always choose organic.

To cleanse with honey:

  1. Start by cleansing the face with warm water.
  2. Apply honey to the palm of your hand (I use honey from a squeeze bottle for ease) and gently massage into the skin. Continue to massage the honey on your skin in a circular motion.
  3. Rinse your face clean of the honey with water and gently pat dry with a clean towel.

This is just step one though – to find the full skincare routine, click here.
